Progressive Education teaches students what to think and how to do it. Classical Education teaches students how to think and what to do. Western Christian civilization was built on the foundation of Classical Catholic Education. It is the inheritance we have the right and duty to transmit to our children.
As I stated in the Academic Overview, the emphasis of this blog is to share elements of a Catholic Classical education curriculum as implemented on a school wide basis.
Homeschool parents should remember that there is a real difference in implementing a curriculum on a school wide basis and implementing curriculum in a home school setting.
In the school setting, teachers can focus on developing their own subject or grade level subjects. They rely on other teachers and the entire school curriculum to supplement their work. Thus students benefit from the Classical education climate throughout the entire school. (Also, in a Catholic school, one also has the inspiration of the Faith permeating all the subjects.)
It can be difficult for homeschoolers to fully implement a Catholic Classical Education curriculum because they do not have these advantages. Instead of focusing on one subject or class, they often have to teach several grade levels at once. Also homeschool parents do not have other teachers or resources to rely on and supplement their efforts.
In this blog I want to supply the support homeschool parents need. I have 30 years’ experience in Classical Catholic education as both teacher and administrator. I hope to draw on this knowledge and experience to provide resources homeschool parents need. Utilizing these resources, I believe homeschool parents can impart the treasures of Classical education to their children. A full school curriculum can seem overwhelming for a homeschool situation, but feel free to pick and choose what would be helpful to you.
