The next step is to diagram the action word, called verb. The verb is the action word in a sentence. The verb is the word that does the action, hits.
Our school used a Diagramming Sequence Grade Guide. This guide breaks up diagramming only to the parts of speech taught in each grade level. Instead of teaching complex diagramming all at once in the upper grades, we taught only the parts of speech designated per grade level as background knowledge for the difficult grammar covered in our junior high. Our students did very well with this sequence. We also used Diagramming Sentences by Deborah White Broadwater.
